Learning Commons: Libraries Transformed
In short, the learning commons is about learning. That is not meant to reflect circular logic, but rather to underscore that while the school library traditionally supported (only?) reading and academic learning, the learning commons supports all forms of learning--formal and informal--even if it is not directly related to school.
Rebranding as a learning commons (LC) can help patrons differentiate between the building named “library” and the functions that are typically perceived as specific to a “library” (book circulation, collection development/management, research). Learning commons is an umbrella term; the library is still intact within the learning commons as part of the shared, multifunctional space.
